With a long history spanning over 30 years, ENSPEC is a privately owned company with a reputation for providing a wide range of consultancy services to the arboriculture, ecology, biodiversity, conservation, and heritage disciplines across Australia, with the main business focus on servicing the eastern seaboard, Tasmania, and South Australia.

We are a science-led business, constantly testing how the natural world is changing in response to the demands of the built environment.

Our consulting services are delivered to federal, state and local government departments nationally, and we work across all significant infrastructure projects, specialising in renewable energy and greenfield transmission lines.

With our continual growth in the Government Sector and our large market share of renewable energy greenfield work, we require an experienced General Manager to lead the future management of our business based in Rowville, Victoria.

The appointment of a General Manager will allow the Managing Director to focus on specialised consulting services and scientific research, support field operations, and provide support and guidance to our employees and subcontractors, leading the delivery of some of the largest environmental contracts in Australia.

The General Manager's responsibilities will ultimately include overseeing all the business's day-to-day activities, with the longer-term vision of moving into the planned future CEO position, if desired. The position includes ensuring compliance with business governance, a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the business, including client interactions, tender submission preparation and negotiations, financial management, Work Health and Safety/Environment, and higher-level staff management.

This is a salaried, full-time position including a suitable Company Vehicle, Super, and Benefits.

The role

Reporting to the Managing Director. You will own the management of ENSPEC, and we need you to ensure the delivery of:

  • Operational performance — budgets, forecasting, financial reporting, project margin

  • Long-standing client relationships across all clients

  • Tender preparation, pricing and negotiations, be well versed in the contract pipeline of future works

  • ISO, Insurance and other certifications and compliance kept current

  • Leading a team of consulting arborists, ecologists, heritage and administration staff

  • Overseeing the company's research and laboratory services

  • New business discoveries that fit our consultancy portfolio — quality of fee, not volume of fee

  • Direct support to the Managing Director on strategy and execution

  • Direct support to the Finance and Administration manager

Who we want

A business manager first. Five-plus years managing a team of consultants across a diverse range of environmental services, administration staff and financial management focused on the business profit and loss, ideally in professional services or environmental consulting.

Useful background includes arboriculture, horticulture, ecology, environmental science, forestry or engineering — any tertiary qualification that sits between the natural and built environments. You don’t need to be a true environmental person, but you must respect what the team does and why it matters.

Non-negotiable: a track record of running a P&L to budget, calm and clear leadership of independent expert staff, strong written and verbal communication. Australian citizenship, full driver’s licence, willingness to undergo a Police Check and pre-employment medical.

What you get
  • Competitive salary, with super and a fully maintained company vehicle

  • Performance-based wage growth —Results and professionalism move you up; tenure does not

  • Rowville HQ and laboratory to manage and evolve

  • A long-term position — our senior team of consultants has been with ENSPEC for over 10 years and brings a wealth of industry knowledge

  • Real influence on the work that decides what Australia’s natural environment looks like several generations from now
