We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Health, Safety and Compliance Officer to support and strengthen our workplace health and safety, compliance and emergency management functions.

About the RoleThe Health, Safety and Compliance Officer supports the School's workplace health and safety, compliance and emergency management functions. The role works closely with the Business Manager, HR Manager, Facilities Manager and leadership team to ensure effective systems and processes are in place to support a safe working environment and compliance with relevant legislative and Department of Education requirements.
The position provides operational support, coordination and advice across workplace safety, incident management, emergency management and compliance activities, contributing to a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement.
Key stakeholders include the Principal Team, Business Manager, HR Manager, Facilities Manager, OH&S Committee and relevant Department of Education personnel.
This role is 0.4 FTE 2 days per week with 10 weeks paid leave per year.
Key Responsibilities
Workplace Health and Safety
Support implementation and ongoing maintenance of the School's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) framework.
Assist in ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety legislation and Department of Education requirements.
Coordinate workplace inspections, risk assessments and hazard identification activities.
Assist with incident investigations and monitor implementation of corrective actions.
Maintain OHS documentation, registers and records.
Monitor workplace safety trends and recommend practical improvements.
Incident Management and Reporting
Coordinate the effective use of Department of Education reporting systems including EduSafe Plus and AIMS.
Ensure incidents, hazards and near misses are accurately recorded, investigated and monitored.
Support managers in incident follow-up and corrective actions.
Prepare reports and data summaries relating to workplace safety and incidents.
Compliance Coordination
Maintain compliance registers and assist with monitoring key compliance obligations.
Support policy review cycles and maintenance of compliance documentation.
Assist with audits, reviews and compliance reporting activities.
Monitor regulatory and Department updates relevant to school operations.
Emergency Management
Support development and implementation of the School's Emergency Management Plan.
Coordinate emergency drills and preparedness activities.
Maintain emergency management documentation and records.
Assist with post-incident reviews and improvement actions.
Contractor and Facilities Safety
Assist with contractor induction and compliance processes.
Support monitoring of contractor safety documentation and requirements.
Work closely with the Facilities Manager regarding workplace safety matters associated with facilities, maintenance and capital works activities.
Training and Stakeholder Engagement
Assist in delivering workplace safety and compliance awareness activities.
Provide advice and support to staff on OHS and compliance processes.
Support OH&S Committee activities and reporting.
Liaise with Department personnel and external stakeholders as required.
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve workplace safety and compliance systems.
Contribute to development of practical processes that reduce risk and improve operational effectiveness.
Promote positive workplace safety practices across the School.
Selection Criteria
1. Demonstrated experience in workplace health and safety, compliance, injury management or a related field.
2. Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, compliance requirements and risk management principles.
3. Demonstrated ability to coordinate systems, maintain accurate records and manage competing priorities.
4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify trends and support practical improvements.
5. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders.
6. Demonstrated ability to contribute to organisational improvement through the implementation of effective systems, processes or workplace initiatives.
Qualifications and Professional Attributes
Essential
Relevant qualification or experience in occupational health and safety, compliance, business administration or a related discipline.
Current Employee Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain).
Desirable
Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (or equivalent).
Experience using EduSafe Plus, AIMS or similar incident management systems.
Experience working in a school, government or large organisational environment.
