Role

The Nurse Manager is required to coordinate and manage the health services of the school providing clinical nursing leadership.

  • Managing and coordinating day-to-day health operations within a school environment.

  • Contributes to quality improvement activities to improve the health outcomes for students.

  • Leading and managing the provision of professional development activities within the school community which relate to health and wellbeing.

  • Leading the development of policy and procedure relating to health and wellbeing.

  • Demonstrates high levels of autonomous nursing practice, and expertise in school nursing.

  • In addition to coordinating and managing the school health centre undertakes the activities and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse range 4.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the management, development and implementation of professional support services in medical compliance management within an educational environment, including guidance to other professional staff, extending to the community and other outside agencies.

  • Provide leadership, training and development for others in the adaption and application of professional medical fields.

  • Undertake advanced interventions in dealing with particularly complex cases that may require cross-profession or agency collaboration.

  • Interpret and analyse data to inform and provide authoritative advice to senior management.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Create and manage Student Health Support Plans and Student Management Plans

  • Provide primary nursing care to sick or injured students 

  • Communicate with parents/caregivers if child is unwell in line with DE Policies and Procedures

  • Keep up to date with DE policy and accountabilities

  • Provide naso-gastric & PEG feed/care as required

  • Liaise with service providers e.g. school care program, paediatricians etc

  • Co-ordinate and manage medical training for staff where required

  • Complete Annual First Aid/Anaphylaxis/Asthma Risk Assessment

  • As a member of the OH&S Committee attend meetings

  • Maintain medical supplies and equipment for First Aid room, bumbags, excursion and camp kits

  • Oversee student accident/incident recording in Edusafe and hardcopy filing

  • Manage student medication requirements in line with DE Policy and Procedures

  • Manage Dental visits 

  • Manage student immunisations

  • Manage staff flu injections

  • Manage the First Aid budget

Location Profile

Dandenong Valley SDS is a specialist school located in Narre Warren Victoria. We cater for students with moderate to severe intellectual disability who may also have physical impairments, medical needs, sensory needs and autism spectrum disorder. The school was built in 1990 with an addition of a purpose built BER building in 2012 and a new senior school and specialist teaching spaces built in 2024.  School facilities include a PMP room, sensory garden, horticulture centre, bike track, fitness room, engine room and sensory room, generous sized classrooms and stimulating play spaces. All students participate in weekly water familiarisation, safety and swimming sessions in the Hydrotherapy pool.

Students at our school range in age from 5-18 years of age and we also have an Early Education Program which caters for children from 2.8 -4.8 years. The three year olds attend this program one day a week and the four year olds attend two days a week.

Students in their last two years of schooling participate in senior transition programs. The aim of these programs is to provide students with a diverse range of age appropriate learning experiences in preparation for post school options and adult life.

Our Special Education programs are fully supported by a therapy team which consists of speech therapists, occupational therapists, a physiotherapist and music therapist.
