About the Role

We are looking for an exceptional engineering leader to join our Leadership Team as Head of Engineering, with a pathway to Chief Technology Officer. Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a rare opportunity to define and drive the technical strategy of a purpose-led, fast-scaling SaaS platform used by hundreds of schools.

You will lead Schoolbox's engineering function across product delivery, infrastructure, security, and innovation — owning the processes, resourcing, and technology that power our platform. As a key contributor to Schoolbox's strategic direction, you'll partner closely with the Chief Product Officer and leadership team to ensure engineering excellence is at the heart of everything we build.

What You'll Do

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, mentor, and develop senior engineering staff including Product Owners, Infrastructure Manager, System Architects and Product Designers
• Design and continuously improve a scalable team structure and ways of working to deliver engineering excellence.
• Drive a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, career development, and continuous improvement.
• Create and maintain team charters, KPIs, and performance frameworks that keep the team aligned and motivated.

Product & Technology Delivery

• Partner with the CPO to oversee the product roadmap, ensuring accountability and alignment with delivery milestones.
• Drive the strategic approach to Schoolbox's cloud infrastructure, ensuring a stable, secure hosted environment for all customer instances.
• Oversee escalation and incident management processes, and ensure adherence to security policies, compliance requirements, and SLAs.
• Champion a customer-centric culture across engineering, including DevSupport and support escalation quality.

Innovation & AI

• Establish, implement, and govern a comprehensive AI strategy for engineering that is scalable, ethically sound, and directly drives customer value and product innovation.
• Proactively review and evolve the technology stack to ensure it remains modern, scalable, and strategically aligned.
• Embed an Agile culture across all technical teams that is aligned with our risk appetite and strategic objectives.

Leadership Team Participation

• Active contributor to Schoolbox's Leadership Team, participating in strategic planning and cross-functional initiatives.
• Partner with key stakeholders to create and manage engineering resourcing and expense budgets.
• Drive data-informed departmental strategy that supports Schoolbox's broader strategic objectives.

About You

You are a seasoned engineering leader who thrives on building high-performing teams and delivering quality technology at scale. You lead with empathy, think strategically, and bring positive energy to everything you do.

You will bring:

• A degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
• 10+ years of web development experience, with a deep understanding of modern software engineering practices.
• 5+ years of AWS cloud architecture experience.
• Proven leadership of multiple engineering teams, ideally across varied business sizes from SME to larger scale ups.
•  Experience embedding AI-driven development practices within a product engineering context.
• A data-driven mindset and the ability to translate strategy into execution.
• Strong stakeholder communication skills with the confidence to contribute at an executive leadership level.
