Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Registered Psychiatric Nurses, to join the Ward 8 Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit in a Clinical Nurse Consultant role.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres and Kilmore District Hospital.  In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About Mental Health Division:

Northern Health is the third largest mental health service in Victoria Northern.

Within the Mental Health Division, we pride ourselves on providing high quality mental health services to people living in the northern regions of Melbourne, and work in a collaborative way with consumers and carers based on recovery principles.

We aim to provide strong clinical leadership to support all staff in the provision of professional treatment and care by our integrated community teams, inpatient, and residential services.

About the Role:

The Clinical Nurse Consultant will be based at Ward 8/NPU2, a mixed gender, Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit at Northern Hospital.

This full- time role will be responsible for implementing Department of Health frameworks (Safewards, Mental Health Intensive Care Framework, Elimination of Restrictive Interventions etc.) to ensure best-practice care and specialist programs are delivered.

The CNC will support the Program Manager by developing, maintaining, and evaluating a specialist bed- based program.

Additionally, the CNC will contribute to workforce development by mentoring and role modelling to ensure staff are equipped to manage high-risk and vulnerable consumers with complex needs.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Essential

  • Registration as a registered nurse under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act (2009) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Bachelor Degree in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing or equivalent, or, Bachelor Degree in Nursing plus a Postgraduate qualification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
  • Minimum four (4) years of post-registration experience working in variety of public acute mental health settings

Experience

  • Demonstrated significant problem-solving skills that may require considerable understanding and interpretation of facility and departmental policy. 
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership within mental health with proven ability to mentor and develop the mental health nursing workforce within a coaching framework.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the recovery approach in mental health treatment and support, with a focus on working collaboratively with consumers and carers to promote self-determination and enable progress towards reaching consumers personal recovery goals.

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours

  • A working knowledge of MHWA and other relevant legislation
  • Ability to provide expert level clinical expertise to initiate and lead evidence-based nursing practice in the care delivery to consumers with complex mental health needs; including drug and alcohol and disability.
  • Evidence of knowledge and application of contemporary theories and techniques of practice that underlie mental health care and management of challenging behaviours.
