About the role

Western Health has in excess of 45 Hospital Medical Officer (PGY3+) positions in our General Practice & Community (GPC) Training Stream suitable for applicants who have had at least two years of medical experience.

Western Health offers a supported training environment where Senior Medical Staff make an effort to know you personally. Junior doctors in the GP Training Stream are supported by a dedicated Director of Clinical Training and Medical Education Officer.

We offer a variety of rotations within the PGY3+ General Practice and Community Training Stream, these include:
  • Aged Care/GEM/Subacute
  • Cardiology
  • Clinical Informatics/Digital Health
  • Nephrology
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Oncology
  • Paediatric Medicine
  • Palliative Care

Every effort will be made to provide rotations of your choice – taking into consideration your career interests, training requirements, previous experience and demands of particular rotations. However, this is not a guarantee as this is dependent on the group of successful applicants and final rotation preferences. All HMOs will be assigned a combined annual leave/nights/relieving term during the year.

We have a strong focus on junior doctor education with a dedicated weekly intern and HMO education program, simulation and workshops for junior doctors, hospital grand rounds and a broad range of unit-specific education sessions. The Western Centre for Health Research and Education (WCHRE) at the Sunshine Hospital campus is a purpose-built teaching and research facility, including a state-of-the-art simulation centre.

Key responsibilities
  • Work under the supervision and support of the registrar or consultant to further develop general clinical and decision‑making skills
  • Assume responsibility for patient care in accordance with the care model of the ward/unit, ensuring that clinical procedures are performed in accordance with Western Health policy and procedure
  • Ensure quality patient care via clinical assessment, admissions and development of management plans
  • Participate in on‑going assessment of competencies via a mid and end of term unit assessment
About you
  • Hold or be eligible for appropriate medical registration with AHPRA
  • Have completed a minimum of 2 years full‑time medical employment post Primary Medical Degree (e.g. MBBS)
