Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres and Kilmore District Hospital.  In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role:

Patient Support Units (PSU) enable timely engagement with patients on surgical preparation lists, referral management and pathway redesign to non-surgical treatment.

Northern Health established a PSU in 2022/23, initially reporting via Health Service Partnerships, and since 23/24 reports directly to the Department of Health. Department funding has been committed until 30 June 2027.

Health services have established localised governance structure to support implementation, delivery and monitoring of the PSUs, along with collaboration with other health services.

The PSU priorities for 24/25 are:

1. Preparation list and outpatient list auditing

2. Pathway redesign

3. Enable the Planned Surgery Blueprint Reforms

The Project Lead – Patient Support Unit role is responsible for:   

  • Governance and support of project and project management lead 
  • Compiling governance committee agendas and co-chair
  • Submission of PSU annual plan in collaboration with Division Surgical Services
  • Quarterly reporting against plan initiatives and financial reconciliation 
  • Quarterly PSU Lead Meetings
  • Attendance and participation at quarterly Department of Health PSU Forums
  • Share case studies

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with a range of individuals and stakeholder groups
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously under broad direction, and as a member of a cohesive team
  • Proven working style which is flexible, positive and collaborative
  • Strong understanding of the Victorian health care system
  • Ability to be self-directed, motivated and to work as part of a team
  • Commitment to accuracy and quality in all prepared work
  • Ability to role model Northern Health values – Safe Kind Together
  • Previous project management experience essential
  • Understanding of surgical services desirable but not essential
