Motor Mechanic (General) – Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults in petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles using diagnostic equipment and manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct inspections and assessments of vehicle engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering systems, suspension components, and other mechanical assemblies.
  • Dismantle, remove, repair, and replace defective engine and vehicle components, ensuring all repairs meet industry and manufacturer standards.
  • Reassemble engines, transmissions, and associated vehicle systems following repairs or overhauls.
  • Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, engine tuning, and safety inspections.
  • Test, adjust, and calibrate repaired systems and components to ensure optimal performance, safety, and compliance with roadworthiness requirements.
  • Utilize computerised diagnostic tools and electronic testing equipment to identify faults and verify repairs.
  • Inspect vehicles to determine roadworthiness and recommend repairs required to meet regulatory and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and parts usage reports.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform on-site troubleshooting and repair services when required.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with workplace health and safety procedures and environmental regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and team members regarding vehicle faults, repair requirements, and maintenance recommendations.

Task & responsibilities

  • Detecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults in engines and parts
  • Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and checking parts
  • Repairing and replacing worn and defective parts and reassembling mechanical components, and referring to service manuals as needed
  • Performing scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, lubrications and engine tune-ups, to achieve smoother running of vehicles and ensure compliance with pollution regulations
  • Reassembling engines and parts after being repaired
  • Testing and adjusting mechanical parts after being repaired for proper performance
  • Diagnosing and testing parts with the assistance of computers
  • Mechanic may inspect vehicles and issue roadworthiness certificates or detail work required to achieve roadworthiness
  • Mechanic may respond to vehicle breakdown service calls

Qualification & experience

Qualifications and Experience

  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (or equivalent trade qualification).
  • Minimum of one to two years of relevant work experience as a Motor Mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle engines, transmissions, braking, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and repair tools.
  • Ability to diagnose faults and carry out repairs efficiently and accurately.
  • Sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, service bulletins, and repair documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience working with a variety of vehicle makes and models is highly regarded.
