About the Role

Reporting directly to our Engineering/Continuous Improvement Manager, the Maintenance Fitter will play a critical role in ensuring plant uptime, asset reliability, and overall equipment performance across our food manufacturing operations.

This hands-on position involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems across a variety of production lines — including automated mixing, filling, sealing, and packaging machinery. You’ll be the go-to expert for resolving equipment issues quickly and safely, helping us deliver high-quality products on time, every time.


Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Preventative, Corrective & Predictive Maintenance

  • Execute scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) tasks as per maintenance plans (daily, weekly, monthly, annual)

  • Diagnose and repair breakdowns in production, packaging, utility, and ancillary equipment

  • Perform root-cause analysis of repeat failures and develop permanent corrective actions

  • Utilise vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, or other predictive techniques (where available)

  • Assist in condition monitoring and reliability initiatives (e.g. lubrication programs, belt alignment, bearing checks)

Plant Upgrades, Installations & Shutdown Projects

  • Support installation, commissioning and modifications of new machinery and line improvements

  • Lead or assist during planned shutdowns, coordinating mechanical tasks, resource allocation, and contractor work

  • Fabricate, modify, or adapt mechanical components, brackets, guards, frames, piping supports, etc.

  • Work from engineering drawings, technical specifications, OEM manuals and change control processes

Mechanical Systems & Equipment Oversight

  • Maintain mechanical systems: gears, sprockets, chains, pulleys, bearings, couplings, shafts, cams, bushings

  • Handle hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems (valves, actuators, cylinders, hoses)

  • Monitor and adjust machine alignment, clearances, tolerances and mechanical set-ups

  • Liaise with electrical/automation trades to coordinate mechanical & electrical troubleshooting

Workshop & Asset Management

  • Oversee workshop operations—ensuring tools, spare parts, and equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, stored

  • Maintain accurate equipment and repair records in CMMS (e.g. MEX) — work orders, maintenance logs, history

  • Monitor spare parts usage, raise purchase requisitions, manage stock levels of critical spares

  • Ensure tools and safety guards are returned to correct places and are in good condition

Safety, Compliance & Quality

  • Strict adherence to WHS / OHS legislation, GMP, HACCP, Food Safety, GMP practices

  • Perform mechanical risk assessments, lock-out/tag-out, permit to work procedures before work begins

  • Carry out mechanical inspections during audits, GMP rounds and take prompt corrective actions

  • Ensure mechanical work meets quality, hygiene, and production standards

Team Support, Leadership & Training

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to mechanical technicians, apprentices and trade assistants

  • Assist in training on mechanical theory, safe practices and best maintenance techniques

  • Communicate proactively with production and other stakeholders to prioritise mechanical tasks

  • Participate in continuous improvement teams and lead mechanical reliability projects or Kaizen initiatives

Performance Improvement & Cost Management

  • Identify opportunities to reduce mechanical downtime, energy use, wear parts, and total cost of ownership

  • Develop mechanical standards, checklists, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

  • Support lifecycle planning, replacements, and refurbishment of plant assets

  • Analyse mechanical failure trends, prepare reports and present to Engineering & Maintenance leadership


Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Trade Qualification

Australian recognised Mechanical Fitter / Fitter & Turner or Mechanical Engineering qualification – essential

Experience

Minimum 5 years’ experience in a maintenance role within food manufacturing, FMCG, or industrial production

Technical Skills

Strong diagnostics across mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical drive systems

Maintenance Systems

Experience using CMMS software (MEX preferred) and executing structured PM programs

Safety & Compliance

In-depth understanding of WHS, GMP, HACCP, and ISO/IMS standards

Communication

Excellent communication, teamwork, and time management skills

Licences

Forklift licence (or willingness to obtain) and current driver’s licence

Technology

Proficient in MS Office; capable of analysing data and creating reports

Attitude

Reliable, proactive, and committed to continuous improvement

Desirable:

  • Experience in automated or high-speed packaging environments

  • Basic electrical or PLC exposure (disconnect/reconnect permit)

  • Experience with Lean, 5S, or TPM methodologies
